AAA  PROVIDES  SAFETY  TIPS FOR

MOTORISTS  AND  PEDESTRIANS

HELENA, Mont., (October 24, 2011) – Pedestrians and motorists alike face numerous challenges each day while driving to work, walking to school or running errands around town. Practicing safety during every outing can potentially prevent an accident, an injury or even save a life. AAA offers the following safety tips for both pedestrians and motorists.

For pedestrians:

  • Be predictable. Stay off freeways and restricted zones. Cross or enter streets where it is legal to do so.
  • Use sidewalks where provided. If no sidewalk is available, walk facing the road traffic. Pedestrians are more visible to the oncoming vehicles and pedestrians can see the flow of traffic more easily.
  • Buy clothes that incorporate reflective materials and that are highly visible.
  • Be wary. Not all drivers are paying attention all of the time. Make eye contact to be sure they see you.
  • Avoid walking and call a cab if you are impaired by alcohol or drugs. These substances can affect your ability to see, hear and focus on your surroundings, including traffic.
  • Use extra caution when crossing multiple-lane or high speed streets.

For motorists:

  • Watch for pedestrians all the time, everywhere. They might not be where they’re supposed to be.
  • Stop two car-lengths back at crosswalks so other motorists can see the pedestrian, and the pedestrian can see all lanes of traffic.
  • Do not pass a car stopped in one lane until you are sure it is not waiting for a pedestrian to cross.
  • Don’t assume that pedestrians see you or that they will act predictably. They may be physically or mentally impaired.
  • Double-check before you turn. While you’re waiting for a “gap” in traffic, a pedestrian might move into your intended path.
  • Be especially attentive around schools and in neighborhoods where children are active.

“It’s heartbreaking to hear about traffic accidents involving pedestrians. Our goal is to increase awareness and improve traffic safety for everyone, no matter how they get around,” said Tara Hanley, AAA Spokesperson.
